There was a time when this stronghold could not get a foothold in our lives. It stayed in the background and came out only for short periods of time. Worldliness was quickly defeated.
Today, however, this stronghold is advancing at an alarming rate and with evil motives it is trying to take over. It first attacks us as children and without the proper training and guidance it can continue long into our later years. Even when we have had the right training, we can be allured away by its false claims of safety from sin.
Where is its strength emanating from? Other strongholds such as greed and lust, strongholds in media, advertising and strongholds in various groups, and organizations. These other strongholds have taught us, and are teaching us, that the world’s goods and the world’s good, which is non existent, (Isaiah 64:6 We’ve all become unclean, and all our righteous acts are like permanently stained rags. All of us shrivel like leaves, and our sins carry us away like the wind.) is far better than our relationship with God. It takes a long time for us to realize that good in a worldly sense can destroy us, and worse, when the stronghold of worldliness takes over, it can blind us from seeing the truth.
Unfortunately the stronghold of worldliness can take over all areas of our lives if it is allowed to flourish. It ignores God’s will and his word in order to fulfil it’s agenda–to kill, steal and destroy our lives, our families, and our future here on earth, and eventually our life everlasting with God.
1. Check everything that you do with the word of God. Don’t ignore his word. He and his word are one. If you deliberately go against God’s word you fail.
Matthew 16:26 What good will it do for people to win the whole world and lose their lives? Or what will a person give in exchange for life?
2. Don’t give in to peer pressure. It’s so tempting to join a gossip group or a way of thinking because it is popular.
Colossians 2:8 Be careful not to let anyone rob you of this faith through a shallow and misleading philosophy. Such a person follows human traditions and the world’s way of doing things rather than following Christ.
Colossians 3:2 Keep your mind on things above, not on worldly things.
3. Receive Christ if you haven’t already. If you think you are in Christ but chronically go against the word of God in your choices, then you are not in Christ. Turn back.
Colossians 2:20 If you have died with Christ to the world’s way of doing things, why do you let others tell you how to live? It’s as though you were still under the world’s influence.
4. Know what true good is. There is only one good and that good is one with God.
Galatians 1:7 But what some people are calling good news is not really good news at all. They are confusing you. They want to distort the Good News about Christ.
1 Peter 1:20 He is the lamb who was known long ago before the world existed, but for your good he became publicly known in the last period of time.
5. Love the things of God. When you choose to love, forgive, be grateful, have self-control, etc. your life is more at peace, more joyful even in the midst of trials, and your future is sure.
1 John 2:15-17 Don’t love the world and what it offers. Those who love the world don’t have the Father’s love in them. 16 Not everything that the world offers—physical gratification, greed, and extravagant lifestyles—comes from the Father. It comes from the world, and 17 the world and its evil desires are passing away. But the person who does what God wants lives forever.
